I am referring to the half-page political ad which implied she lied about her hunting record. As the Chronicle reported the next day, the accusation had no merit.
Only a genuine investigation would reveal the truth of what happened but it is my opinion, based on more than 30 years of experience in local politics, that this was the most outrageous, immature and desperate act ever committed in local election history. I think her opponent and his friends became so excited about the possibility of impugning the integrity of Franke Wilmer that they didn't even do their homework thoroughly. Joe, Donnie and Steve, the "outdoor enthusiasts" who paid for the ad, did it so that their candidate would have what we call in politics, "deniability." The degree of sophistication of the tactics employed doesn't rise above the level of an adolescent prank, and no one with an ounce of sense would believe Mr. Klug's denial of complicity. We all know how campaign strategies are coordinated.
Should he ever decide to present himself again for public office, voters will be reminded of his lack of maturity and integrity. He probably should also apologize to all of the decent, well-intentioned people who supported him. If indeed his friends acted independently and caused this embarrassment, they should step up and take responsibility.
Jack Jelinski
Bozeman

Posted by admin at 01:17 PM | Comments (0)

November 16, 2006

New Kid's on the Block

Gallatin Democrats new Legislative leaders:
JP Pomnichowski
House District 63

Thanks, Democrats, for a strong campaign and strong election! I'm truly
honored to serve. Gallatin County will have equal Democrat/Republican
representation in the state capitol, and I'm one of two women (myself and
Franke Wilmer) who will represent our county. I'll work hard on issues that
directly affect our city and county, and those same issues impact all of
Montana. I'm dedicated to improving land use and water resources policies,
keeping growth manageable, and promoting education and innovations in energy
production. Many thanks!
Mike Phillips
House District 66

It is a great honor to be elected to serve as the Representative for HD 66.
I am looking forward to the 2007 session to do a little more than my fair share to ensure passage of useful legislation concerning public education, renewable energy, and environmental protection.

Franke Wilmer
House District 64
A very hearty THANKS to the voters of HD 64 who elected me with 57%
of the vote! This speaks volumes about them as door by door, voter by
voter, I asked them to trust me, and they did. I am so honored to be
the new representative for these fine people and already working on
draft bills to remedy some of the issues they raised with me during
the campaign -- encouraging alternative energy use by the state,
bigger deductions for installing residential alternative energy, tax
relief for seniors and disabled Veterans on fixed income, promoting
respect of Montana's First Nations through education, and more. I
will work with our local delegation and others throughout the state to
strengthen protection for a clean and healthful environment, move
toward clean and domestic production of energy, expanding access to
affordable health care, and improving education at all levels to
enable Montana and the US to become more competitive in a globalizing
economy.

Posted by admin at 04:00 PM | Comments (0)

November 03, 2006

Is this all you got? In short, poaching. They put this ad on four days before the election in a desperate attempt to try to sandbag Franke's successful race for House District 64. The questions abound. 1. What does Jim Klug have to do with this libel? 2.Who are these "sportsmen" and why would they attack Franke? 3. I would certainly think it is the base upon which stands the remainder of one's political platform. I cannot think of any candidate that I have known over my many years for whom this more broadly defines than Franke Wilmer.
It has been my pleasure to have worked with Franke for the past two years on the state Human Rights Commission. As the governor's appointed chairman, Franke has led our commission with a well-informed evenhandedness. Preparation requires hours of readings of transcripts and case study. I find that Franke not only is completely familiar with even the broad base of the case but also has explored its width and depth.
Beyond all, is her deep and abiding concern for the humanity of those before our commission. Her integrity would permit no other approach.
Does this translate into a good legislator? I haven't a moment's doubt. Any action on her part will be well reasoned and well studied. Most of all though, her vote will be determined by its effect on both the populace in general and the individual in particular.
Integrity matters. Integrity counts and most of all it is defined in the person of Franke Wilmer.
Allen Secher
Bozeman

Posted by admin at 07:13 AM | Comments (0)

October 13, 2006

Hometown donations

One of strengths of the American political process is its transparency. Because law requires that candidates who run for public office disclose the sources of their donations, we can get an accurate picture of who's giving the money to support a candidate's campaign. Since neither candidate has a voting record, this may be a valuable way to understanding what (and whom) the candidate represents.
In the case of the race for House District 64 (Franke Wilmer-D and Jim Klug-R), the contributors to these campaigns paint very different pictures.
Jim Klug received 65 cash contributors (as of May 25) for his election campaign for a total of $8,245. Half of the people who made these donations are contractors, realtors, developers, their employees and families. And 65 percent of the people in this group who gave money to the Klug campaign are from out of state, most of whom gave the maximum amount allowed by law.
Franke Wilmer received 98 cash contributions (as of May 25) for her election campaign for a total of $5,986. Half of all the people who made these donations are people in K-12 and higher education. Less than 6 percent of the people in this group who gave money to the Wilmer campaign are from out of state.
The obvious question for voters in House District 64 is "Which person reflects the values I care about?" People who donate to campaigns expect that their candidates will vote in ways that favor their interests. Do we, the people of House District 64, want to be represented by the interests of contractors, realtors and developers, many of whom are from out of state? Or do we want to be represented by people in education, the overwhelming majority of which are local?
Ada Giusti
Bozeman

Posted by admin at 01:08 PM | Comments (0)

September 25, 2006

Meet Franke Wilmer

I'm Franke Wilmer, and I'm running for House District 64 in the state Legislature. I met many voters during the primary and look forward to meeting many more before Nov. 7.
The 2007 Legislature will address some very important issues - making college tuition affordable for Montana students and families, continuing work on defining quality K-12 public education and how to adequately fund it, expanding access to affordable health care, supporting small businesses, and developing clean alternative energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. In 2005 Gov. Schweitzer and the Democrats made progress on many of these issues -without raising taxes - and with Democratic leadership in the House I believe this progress can continue.
If elected, three principles will guide my thinking in Helena. The first is fiscal responsibility. Democrats have a strong record of growing the economy without increasing taxes paid by middle-class Montanans. Fiscal responsibility means that when tax cuts are proposed, we must say whether they will shift the tax burden or require cutting programs, and when we propose new programs we must say how they will be funded. Past tax cuts, for example, led to higher college tuition as the state's share of funding was cut in half. That was not fiscally responsible.
The second is sustainable development. Growth has been good for Bozeman, but the decisions we make now to balance development with public concern for conservation and overall ecological impact are crucial. I believe in development that is both environmentally and economically sustainable.
The last is economic security for all Montanans. It is not enough for our economy to grow, even sustainably. Working people should be able to meet basic needs for food, housing and health care. How we grow, what kind of jobs and wages, and accessible, affordable health care matter.
I am ready to work on these issues with the governor and sensible legislators in both parties. I ask for your vote on Nov. 7 in HD 64, and together we will keep moving Montana forward.
Franke Wilmer, candidate HD 64
Bozeman

Posted by admin at 07:36 AM | Comments (0)
