Senator Mike Wheat announces run for Attorney General in 2008
From the Bozeman Chronicle:
Former lawmaker and Bozeman attorney Mike Wheat said Wednesday he is planning to run for state attorney general in 2008.
...Wheat, 59, described himself as a moderate and a consensus-builder who could work with people from both political parties, pointing to his relationships with Republican lawmakers during his time as senator.
"Those are all experiences and traits important for somebody who wants to be in the attorney general's office," he said.
Wheat also noted that attorneys general in many states -- particularly New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer -- have been very active in using their offices to protect consumers.
Consumer protection, he said, "is important to me."

Thinking Ahead and Barely Thinking
Left in the West :: Thinking Ahead and Barely Thinking
Long story short -- if Sales doesn't get in the way, it looks likely that a budgetary middle-ground can be found that will probably be pretty good both for short-term and the long-term. The question now is whether Sales can force too much wackiness and short-sightedness into the budget.

Information on on the "Free Trade" talks at Big Sky
This Diary by Montana Maven is a good information source.
The horse trading continues on the Korea Free Trade Agreement but this time it might hinge on cows. Way out here on the Front Range far from Seattle and the prying eyes of ...well...just about everyone except coyotes, deer and some tree huggers, lo and behold, Montanans are hosting the fifth round of trade talks between South Korea and the United States in Big Sky, Montana. A group of protesters have arrived all the way from Korea and will be joined by local activists. What’s interesting to me, a cattle rancher, is that this could be a perfect opportunity for cattle ranchers, environmentalists, and anti-trade activists to form a new and powerful coalition.
TODAY, 10:00 AM, Room 275 in the Student Union Building at Montana State
University
Wendy Cutler, will give a presentation. She is the United States Chief
Negotiator for the "Free Trade Agreement" talks that commence today in Big

our voices heard. Attached is a fact sheet to help you understand why our
support is vital.

GOP will go back to basic
IR // News // GOP will go back to basics
Those proposals include permanent property-tax reductions, giving parents more rights over a child's decision to have an abortion, harsher penalties for sex offenders, a "personal defense" bill giving citizens more leeway to defend themselves against crime, and reforms of the public pension funds.
...
"That's how you meet the political middle ground," says incoming Senate President Mike Cooney, D-Helena. "You find those people willing to look at other ideas, rather than just the party line. That's the political process. There's nothing sinister about it."
