During the 2005 session of the Montana State Legislature, I was privileged, as a legislative spouse, to observe discussions in the legislative chambers and committee rooms. Knowledge of the issue, the ability to think on one’s feet, and the artful use of words did much to persuade. Periodically, humorous quips relieved the pressure-laden atmosphere. Above all, respectful dialogue won the day.
In the Democratic primary for House District 66, we have two candidates who are knowledgeable, quick thinkers, but only one of those candidates has chosen to persuade through the use of positive, reasoned words. That candidate is Mike Phillips. Mike has a history of resolving difficult issues in a collaborative manner. One of Mike’s greatest strengths is that of inclusion.
That cannot be said of his opponent, Tracy Velazquez, who chose, for example, in one of her campaign flyers to pit women against men. Tracy featured a composite of individual photographs of our present-day Gallatin County legislators, Democrats and Republicans. She gave no information as to their views on women’s issues, or any other issues; she simply suggested that you vote for her because she was a women and they were men. She chose to operate in a divisive manner. Yes, women and men do have differing perspectives on some issues. Yes, we do want more women in our Legislature. Fortunately we do have other excellent candidates running in the June 6 primary, and they have chose to play the “issues” card, not the “gender” card.
In the upcoming primary, vote for the person who will give you the best chance of winning acceptance of your positions when representing you in the Legislature. Vote for the person who has consistently shown respect for colleagues and constituents. Vote for Mike Phillips.

The primary election is almost here (June 6). During the last few months I have visited with hundreds of residents from District 66 and have held many conversations with community leaders. I have a good understanding of the needs and concerns of the district and Bozeman and remain excited about redoubling my efforts on behalf of our community by serving as the district’s Representative.
I am a Democrat who will use collaboration to build progressive and long-lasting solutions. It's easy for legislators to blast the other side and score points in the press. However, it's hard but more important to work through disagreements and share the credit to achieve sound policies. I have dedicated myself to those tasks on behalf of House District 66.
In Gallatin County there are 11 elected officials who have relevance to Democrats in a democratic primary. Included in this tally are all five City Commissioners that serve in non-partisan positions, five democratic legislators from Gallatin County, and the lone democratic County Commissioner. I take great pride in the fact that 10 of these 11 have publicly endorsed my campaign.
I would be grateful for your support as well and honored to serve as the Representative for House District 66.

As a legislator in the 2001 session, I carried a bill asking the state to help people afffected by asbestosis and mesothelioma in Libby access federal programs. The state agreed to fund a grant writer to help us through the maze of programs available. Tracy Velazquez was that grant writer and was able to obtain two grants -an environmental justice grant from the EPA and a federal health care grant - which have been beneficial to providing for the needs of those left behind by W. R. Grace. When the grants were due to expire, Tracy wrote a bill asking for an extension for a year until we were eligible to re-apply. She was extremely helpful in getting the bill through the legislative process. When elected to the legislature, Tracy will put her experience in understanding the process to good use in helping her constituents. The affected citizens of Libby have been grateful for her help.

In a time when politics is not a very popular vocation, Mike Phillips restores my faith that campaigning can be done honestly and positively. He is running his campaign for House District 66 in a very ethical way.
He brings to the political scene a real desire to serve our community. He is what Governor Richardson of New Mexico calls the New Progressive--a fiscal conservative with a strong social conscience. Mike has an incredible knowledge of economic realities and workable ecological reforms and the commitment to work hard for Montana. This man also has the know-how and experience to make our public education system the best it can be for the children of Montana.
Mike’s life, his work, and his devotion to his family reflect his high moral values. He will make a great legislator. Vote for him on June 6.

The last two letters to the editor that Mike Phillips posted on the Gallatin Democrats website - one from Christine Smith in Gardiner and one from Elizabeth Roberts in Bozeman - deserve some comment since they were published in the Chronicle too late to respond and both contain misrepresentations about Tracy and about why they support Phillips. In regard to Smith, she is the wife of Doug Smith, project leader for the Yellowstone Gray Wolf Restoration Project in Yellowstone National Park -- the job that Phillips formerly held. Tracy has never misrepresented the work of the Gallatin County legislative delegation, as Smith states, unless pointing out that they were all men is a misrepresentation, which, based on their photos at least, appears not to be the case. So this letter really isn't about gender as an issue in HD 66 as much as it is about Phillips recruiting colleagues, who don't even live in Gallatin County, to attack Tracy's integrity and character.
In regard to Roberts' letter, it seems a bit disingenuous for her to state that Phillips has her vote when she doesn't live in HD 66 but in HD 64, according to her address on the internet. What the reader also doesn't know is that she works for American Wildlands, an organization that in 2004 received $40,000 from the Turner Foundation. Phillips by his own account is the environmental advisor for Turner's philanthropic endeavors.
If either of these two letter writers had commented on Phillips' abilities as a wildlife biologist and how that qualifies him for the legislature, that would have been fine. But clearly, they were recruited to bash Tracy with half-truths and outright lies in the 11th hour of the campaign. In light of this, listening to Phillips - and his supporters - talk about his transparency, honesty and integrity is really getting tiresome.

When deciding who to vote for in the upcoming primary election, note the distinction between talk and action. In House District 66, one appears to be simply talk, and it is difficult to tell what he actually stands for. The other candidate, Tracy Velazquez, is real down-toearth action. I have worked for Tracy for two years now. I started working for her during her 2004 congressional race and now am an administrative assistant for her consulting company. Being around Tracy every day I can vouch for her commitment and desire to solve problems and truly make a difference.
Not only does Tracy have professional experience in health care, hospitals, senior issues and public health, but she has also been a vocal advocate for many issues ranging from equality to civil liberties. Through her work as a consultant for nonprofits, she has been extremely active in regard to drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, poverty, child abuse, domestic violence, as well as many other tough issues facing Montana.
While Tracy has not held public office before, she has been able to accomplish more than most of our elected officials. Some may recognize her from CNN last year, when her thoughts about the parking garage and Hurricane Katrina ignited a nationwide debate on pork barrel politics. She also played a major role in passing the local clean air ordinance.
These are just a few of Tracy's accomplishments, and while I could continue to note all of the amazing things that she has accomplished, there is a word limit to adhere to in these letters!
Please vote on June 6, and when you do, vote for Tracy Velazquez in House District 66. A vote for her is a vote for real action.

Governor Schweitzer works on my behalf far more effectively than Judy Martz ever did. As a woman I am fully aware that sometimes a man is better suited to work on behalf of women's issue than a woman. This is why I urge you to support Mike Phillips for House District 66.
Without doubt Mike is better suited to address the needs and concerns of women than his opponent, Tracy. Velazquez. Her consistent over-simplification of complex issues for the sole purpose of gaining votes is offensive and evidence that she would be ineffective in Helena. Her gross misrepresentation of the fine work done by Democratic legislators from Gallatin County is clear evidence of her willingness to use innuendo and deception to rally voters to her side. Moreover, she has consistently failed to recognize the great work done by the women who currently comprise nearly 40% of the Democratic caucus in Helena. Fortunately, the women I know in House District 66 are smart enough to see through Velazquez's shenanigans.
Most women, including myself, strongly prefer representation based on honesty and integrity, values that will guide Mike Phillips in Helena. Regrettably, it seems that the same cannot be said of his opponent, I urge you to cast your vote for Mike on June 6.

When it comes to voting for the president of the United States, I vote on the candidate's values and substance on which s/he would like to run our country. When it comes to voting for a candidates running for our state's legislature, my behavior will be no different.
As a women voter and a supporter of equal representation of gender in our political system, I am always excited to see female candidates running for political office. I am interested to learn what they are saying about their voting record, personal beliefs, and thoughts about issues facing us; things of substance.
Therefore, it upsets me when a candidate, any candidate, uses gender as the sole reason for why they should be elected. This is what Tracy Velazquez, a women Democrat for the house seat in District 66 running against Mike Phillips, did in her recent ad campaign. Having worked professionally with Mike for years, I am aware of his value system, position on issues, and achievements in our community; my vote for Mike is decided. However, I was interested to hear what Tracy had to say about herself and all I received was jargon and spin.
I would encourage Tracy to stop using flashy, sound bite schemes of the mass market and treat her community members like the intelligent, curious people they are. Please tell us, Tracy, what would you do for your community if you were voted for in HD 66 – aside from just being a woman.

I am writing to ask for your vote this Tuesday in the Democratic primary for Montana House District 66.
My family has lived in this district since 1995, and I have a degree from Montana State. My kids attend Bozeman public schools. I have worked for Montana non-profit organizations such as the Cancer Society and the MSU Foundation, and volunteered with civic groups like Business & Professional Women and Rotary.
Through my business, Commonweal Consulting, I have learned about and worked on many critical issues facing Montana, such as: affordable healthcare; the needs of seniors and at-risk kids; methamphetamine use and its effects on families and communities; alternative energy; economic development; and the impact of industrial pollution on public health and the environment. My broad experience will help me make good decisions in the legislature.
I am a longtime advocate for progressive values. In addition, as a business owner, I know how to make hard budget choices and demand results. If this is the kind of representation you’d like in Helena, please vote for me on June 6th.

Based on my experience in the Montana Senate representing Bozeman and Gallatin County, it is my opinion that the most effective legislators, whether Republican or Democrat, were those who were willing to listen to both sides of an issue and make decisions based on the best interest of the majority.
Being an effective legislator requires vision, discipline and strength of character. Mike Phillips possesses these skills and that is why I support his candidacy for House District 66 unequivocally.

If the voters in House District 66 want a representative in Helena who will devote time, energy and leadership skills in the promotion of the whole range of progressive programs and policies, then Tracy Velazquez is the candidate of choice. She's on the record all down the list.
Looking at urban quality of life issues, she's been up front on parks, library services and pedestrian safety. For individuals, what could be more important than the right to personal privacy and preservation of the Social Security system. And for the less fortunate among us, affordable health care and housing.
If she'll forgive the tired metaphor, this is no "one-trick pony" we're talking about here. For those who are serious about their own progressive values, a vote for Tracy will advance most or all of them right across the board.

I'm writing to encourage voters in House District 66 to support Mike Phillips. He is locked in a tough primary race with Tracy Velazquez, who is a fine person and a worthy representative in her own right.
Mike is a champion of issues ranging from health care and education to energy and taxation-all issues that have direct bearing not only on members of this district but also on all Montanans. Most importantly, Mike understands the political process. He understands that no single legislator, no matter how smart he or she is, can achieve alone what all legislators working across party lines can achieve together.
Mike trusts in a collaborative process. I truly believe Mike is the better prepared and positioned candidate in this election. If Mike wins the seat, he will have the ear of other legislators and will be able to work effectively to get bills that help Bozeman and all Montana citizens passed into law. In short, I know Mike will have the respect of Democratic legislators, and it's a good bet he will use his skills to attract members of the Republican party to vote for bills that serve us all.
For smart, effective, focused, collaborative leadership, Mike Phillips is a great choice.

I am from Legislative District 66 and I am writing to support Tracy Velazquez for this House seat. She is most qualified for the position and is unequivocal on the Democratic values so prized by our district.
Tracy is not just words, she is action and she knows how to get things done. She has both depth and breadth on all issues confronting our state, and without being an elected official she has already accomplished much. Think what she could do for us in Helena.
Tracy stands up for the marginalized of our state and defends our civil liberties and rights. We need more people like her in the Legislature. I will address what she has done for children and what she will do for kids once elected. She has helped pass tobacco control laws to protect kids' health, she has obtained federal funding for services and shelters for homeless youth, mentoring for children of prisoners, and reducing underage alcohol abuse in Montana. Once elected she will work to help our kids get quality education, provide affordable vocational and higher education, find ways to reduce the cost of health care, and by protecting our right to a clean environment will enhance public health. There is real consistency in what Tracy advocates and what she accomplishes. Standing up for what you believe in, being consistent, and not wavering to catch the political wind are all important qualities in a legislator.
I am not voting for Tracy because she is a woman but because she has the qualifications I look for in a candidate. But I am so proud that we have three highly qualified women who are running for house seats. In addition to Tracy, we have Franke Wilmer in District 64, and J.P. Pomnichowski in District 63. Currently, none of our 12 House seats are occupied by women. We need to correct this imbalance because important needs impacting women and families necessitate that both women and men sit at the same table discussing and making laws on issues vital to women. On June 6, Vote Tracy. Vote Franke. Vote JP.

This morning, I started thinking about the differences between my HD 66 primary opponent and me; and the Garth Brooks song, "I’ve Got Friends in Low Places" started running through my head. Granted, I was in the shower, which is where I often have my most creative (although not always pragmatic) ideas, while trying to refrain from singing songs, country or otherwise. But even after a cup of coffee, it still struck me that where I work professionally and organize as an activist - that is, where my friends are is a "low place" - namely, the grassroots.
As a small business owner of a public interest consulting firm and as a staff and board member of a number of non-profits, I've worked to help those who wouldn't otherwise have a voice or much power - including homeless families and kids; abused and neglected children; older Montanans in rural communities with little access to services; folks in Libby who are suffering horrible health problems from the toxic asbestos contamination of the WR Grace vermiculite mine; and women fighting to get coverage for vital health
care. I'm proud of this work. Being a Democrat grows out of my core belief in social justice, liberty and equality; my running for legislature is an expression of my desire to make sure our government promotes and protects these values for all, not just the powerful.
I'm not hoping for support from "high places" in my election; I'm counting on support from you - voters at the grassroots - who want someone in Helena who will stand up for them, whether it's against big out-of-state corporations, a corrupt government, or just plain bad decisions. Not only will I work hard for my "friends in low places;" I promise, if elected, not to sing sappy country songs in public.

As a sitting legislator, I have tried to remain neutral with regard to endorsing candidates in the primary election cycle. My awareness of one candidate's inappropriate reaction to situations of conflict, leads me to break this neutrality. I consider this personality trait a liability and an impedance to become an effective legislator.
Therefore, I write in support of Mike Phillips for HD 66, because he possesses the characteristics of a successful legislator. Mike is intelligent, expresses himself well, is honest and candid, and knows how to work well with others under pressure. He understands fellow Montanans and exhibits a pragmatic and less-partisan approach to politics that will help find solutions to our problems.
I can assure you that I have made this judgment totally without reference to gender. I mention this, because some now make this the issue. In recent times we have been expertly served by both women and men. That circumstance, though, has been related to their qualifications, not their gender.

I do not work for Mike Phillips nor do I live in House District 66, but I live in Montana and I am concerned about the composition of the Montana Legislature. I have known Mike for 25 years and know him to be a person of the utmost integrity - a quality I find most important for a politician.
I also do not know of many people who work harder that Mike, or take more seriously the job of planning for our communities, children, businesses, and environment. Mike is a thinker, a reader, a thoughtful intellect on many issues, a passionate and tireless worker, a trusted and loyal friend. He is down-to-earth and real. What wonderful qualities for a politician. He is someone who will honor all viewpoints belittling no one, dismissing no view without thoughtful examination. Doesn't that sound nice amidst the usual political vitriol we read ever day?
Having Mike in Helena gives more hope for the Legislature.

I think it's great that in the upcoming June primaries Montanans have
several state House and Senate races that are being contested by
candidates within their own parties. Competition is the lifeblood of
representative Democracy. Hopefully, the candidates with the best
ideas for moving Montana forward will prevail at the polls.
I am a working mom, a professional CPA, a wife, and parent of two

You trust the people you know well. My husband and I have watched

from working with his fellow citizens to protect open space to getting
involved with efforts to improve our local schools and even coaching my

do, I hope residents of House District 66 will consider casting their

Tracy Velazquez is undoubtedly the best candidate for state Legislature in House District 66. She is the candidate with original and innovative ideas, and she is the one who has a record of getting things done. Of course, in the politics of the Legislature one has to compromise when "push comes to shove." But if you are not pushing anything, you are the one who gets shoved.
It is our opinion that Tracy is not one to be shoved easily from her core ideas like affordable health care, quality education and protecting our quality of life. These are issues that she has been working on for years, both in politics and in her consulting work with nonprofit organizations. People and organizations pay her to advocate for them and to advise them. Organizations don't hire people who don't get things done.
Let's hire her to work for us in the Montana Legislature. And you can bet your vote that when Tracy reaches across the aisle to compromise with the other side, she will have such a strong case that it will be the other side that will compromise with her.
Vote for Tracy Velazquez for HD 66 in the June primary and then in the November general election.

Upon hearing Mike Phillips was running for the Montana Legislature in HD 66 I was elated. I have known Mike for a couple of years and I can’t think of anyone that would be better suited for the job. He has demonstrated his enthusiasm for the community and civic responsibility. I have witnessed his diligence to be fully versed and educated on the issues. While I worked during the 2005 Legislative Session I witnessed firsthand the need for representatives like Mike. We need representatives that will be consensus building as well a pushing for progressive ideals. Mike will bring in the ability and know how to get things accomplished and push legislation forward. I can’t think of anyone that will represent the people of Montana better. Mike is the candidate I support as a student entering the workforce, as a conservationist, as a woman and as a democrat. I encourage everyone to go vote on June 6th and vote for Mike Phillips.

Bozeman's businesses, schools, and our environment will be well served if Mike
Phillips is elected to serve as represenative of House District 66.
Mike has a strong committment to community service. His talents and skill
include being able to bring people together for a commmon good. One example is
his leadership in rallying support for the successful bond issues needed to
build a new high school for Bozeman.
He also is a candidate who will listen well, and bring fresh ideas to the
debate. I fully expect those ideas to improve our education, economy and
environment will attempt to reach across party lines and build support to move
important issues.
Some people would rather make a point. Mike Phillips is the kind of person who
will make a difference. He deserves your support.

When the Gallatin County Democrats opened their new office in the Gallatin Labor Temple, the historic home since 1949 to many local labor unions, it showed once again that the Democrats are the party of working people. Tracy Velazquez, Democratic candidate running for House District 66, got union support in her race for Congress against Denny Rehberg in 2004 and now once again has shown her strong commitment to labor by making sure her campaign literature has the symbol or union “bug,” the sign of a business that is a union shop. Tracy supports labor in words and actions and that is why she deserves to win the primary on June 6.

I am writing in support of Mike Phillips for House District 66. I got to know Mike while volunteering on the successful "Great Schools for a Great Community" school bond campaign that he co-chaired. Mike recruited and organized our group of volunteers quickly, kept us extremely focused and helped develop the campaign strategy. He backed his words with hard work and showed a high level of dedication to the cause we all believed in.
Mike always worked off the best information, rather than picking and choosing facts that supported his position. This is a critical quality for decision makers. He is honest, open and actively seeks the best solutions.
It became clear during the school bond campaign that Mike is not a person who cuts corners or paints a different picture for different audiences. If elected, he will work hard and be an extremely able representative for Bozeman.

People who come to Montana stay for a reason. We enjoy a quality of life increasingly rare. For now, these qualities distinguish much of Montana from 'earthtone' superstores and 'urbanesque' development rampant in 'anywhere USA'. Indeed, we who choose to stay do so for reasons that brought us here, a uniqueness we value about people, our livelihoods and this place we take pride in calling home.
No longer safe from being diminished, much has been lost in 35 years of my witness alone. We that reside must not only 'step up' but forward about what we value as Montanans or risk losing more. A reluctant yet successful businessman captured it best, "We can use our ingenuity to steward, rather than pillage our remaining inheritance. But time is urgent."
Montanans who desire a healthy economy as an outgrowth of responsible environmental stewardship should rightly ask, 'what of our future?"
Ordinary politics defined by partisanship will contribute neither ingenuity nor responsibility in delivering the healthy business and living environment we desire in Montana. Yet, joining a resilient economy and prosperous small business community with careful stewardship matters for Montanans, an environment we value, and our future. So does leadership.
Montanans who recognize a healthy economy as the substance of environmental stewardship should plainly ask, 'who to lead us?'
The challenge beckons our best: leaders who earn and keep our trust; thinkers who respect dignity and diverse opinion; doers who can lead in reconciling revenue and taxation differences while protecting our environment as a commons we share and value.
I place my trust in Mike Phillips. Mike will lead openly and with fairness on behalf of Montanans who share our unique commons today, and hope for a better one tomorrow.
No ordinary leader will do. In November, vote for Mike Phillips in HD 66.

In response to a recent letter on this page, I am not an employee or co-worker of Mike Phillips, Democratic Candidate for HD 66. I am not even a Democrat. I do however reside in this district and know Mike Phillips to be an individual of good character and integrity. I also know Mr. Phillips is genuinely passionate in his desire to serve all of the people within HD-66, in a fair an even manner. Perhaps Dennis Alexander is being somewhat disingenuous in not disclosing that he is married to the Democratic opponent of Mr. Phillips.

Voters in House District 66 have an opportunity to elect as their representative in the Montana Legislature an individual with visionary ideas, exceptional good judgment, and a strong record of community service.
That individual is my friend, Mike Phillips. By temperament and experience, Mike is fully prepared to serve in the House of Representatives. Mike has the proven ability to listen to other points of view and work with people who have differing political beliefs.
In 2004, Montana voters elected a House of Representatives that was evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats.
This could have been a prescription for complete deadlock. Instead, there was a genuine effort on both sides of the aisle to work out the compromises needed to govern effectively and keep Montana moving forward.
The 2007 session may also be evenly divided — offering the same choice of deadlock or finding common ground. Mike Phillips is more interested in dialogue than debate. He has no time for partisan bickering and is ready to support good ideas regardless of their source. Consequently, as a legislator, Mike is likely to accomplish much more on behalf of the Bozeman community and our state.
As a legislator, it is easy enough to blast the other side and score points in the press. It is a harder and much more important task to work through disagreements, share the credit with others, and achieve sound policies.
Mike Phillips is dedicated to the more important tasks of good government.

As a relatively new resident of Montana House District 66, I have looked into the platforms of candidates running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Chris Harris. I am told by long-time residents it’s a prestigious lot to pick from and any choice would be a good one. But it turns out I am very familiar with one of the candidates — Mike Phillips — and have decided to support him, not because I personally knew him, but because I know he would be a great asset to all Montanans.
I have worked closely with Mike and know first-hand he would make a terrific legislator. Mike is the kind of guy who looks a person straight in the eye and tells them the truth. He is an innovative and energetic thinker, and not constrained by the “walls of the box,” which in these tough times is what I believe our Legislature sorely needs.
But don’t take my word for it. Check out Mike’s Web site and see for yourself (www.mike phillipshd66.com). He has promised complete transparency as a politician, which I think we all know is a character trait now in severe decline among politicians. Mike has promised to take on the tough issues such as education, water, access, and a host of others that truly do need some fixing, and he has laid out exactly where he would propose to go with them.
These issues are publicly available on the Web and elsewhere, and I just wanted to express that if Mike Phillips says he will work for improving this or that, he will, and if you agree with his agenda, as I do, then we have in this race a gentleman we can trust and depend on.

My wife, Jeanne, and I have known Montana House candidate Mike Phillips for several years because both of our families have kids who attend the same neighborhood schools. They’ve also played together on athletic teams coached by Mike.
During his first campaign for elected office two years ago, we were mightily impressed by Mike’s openness, sincerity and enthusiasm. Not to mention, he campaigned hard the old-fashioned way, by going porch to porch trying to meet most of the thousands of constituents in his district.
This year, with him having won the endorsement of his popular predecessor Chris Harris in the race to represent House District 66, I believe Mike would serve Bozeman well in Helena. If his leadership with the recent community-wide effort to revitalize the high school is any indication, he will make us proud by putting public education, promoting economic vitality, and safeguarding our environment at the top of his legislative agenda.
Because he’s always been a valued neighbor and friend in our home district, I will be voting for Mike in the June primary.

I would like to express my support for Mike Phillips for representative for House District 66. I have known Mike for many years as a supervisor, colleague, and friend. I am excited to endorse Mike because I know what an inspiring leader and teammate he is. I always come away from discussions with Mike having learned a great deal, feeling heard and appreciated, and being invigorated. I know from experience that Mike will work hard for his teammates (every citizen of his district) and for the state and accomplish much. Mike will provide great opportunities for all citizens in his district to become actively involved with him as important partners in moving the state of Montana forward. Collaboration is a critical component necessary to move this state ahead, and Mike knows how to build teams and missions, create goals, and design and carry out strategies to see that goals are achieved. Mike is a great listener to all points of view and uses arguments from all sides to critically assess issues and to form positions that are not only consistent with his core beliefs but also respectful of all sides. Mike is pragmatic and will take a common sense but critical approach to all issues before him. He will develop effective solutions and work hard to see them through. His core views are exactly the guiding principles needed for our community, region, and state at this critical time. It is a great thrill to work with Mike because his enthusiasm and inspiration are contagious and because he is so successful at working with his collaborators to see that important work gets done. Mike has all the necessary qualities and skills to be a great citizen-legislator for the folks in HD 66. I am excited and proud to have him run to serve this great state.

"Why don't the Democrats stand for something?" This is the refrain we have heard again and again during the past five years of right-wing Republican rule in this country. Those of us from the "Democratic wing of the Democratic Party," as Howard Dean called us, or the "base" have loudly protested the apparent political passivity and lack of simple courage shown by some in the mainstream Democratic Party. However, all across this country today there are Democratic candidates who are willing to take a stand and Tracy Velazquez, a proud progressive Democrat and candidate for HD 66 in Gallatin County for the Montana Legislature is one. This is why I support her and hope you will too.
Those who claim to represent a mythical "center" of American politics appear to have willfully ignored or clearly misunderstood the critical integrity of the workings of a truly representative democracy. This relies upon a just and pragmatic political compromise that must come out of a debate between two strong but respectful opponents who then reach a resolution where both sides achieve some part of their goals. This can only occur when each party begins its work firmly committed to its core ideals and values, but does not capitulate before the conversation has even begun!
Tracy Velazquez speaks plainly and not in the language of avoidance—she was the only statewide candidate in 2004 that came out publicly against a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. She does not hide behind "code" words or phrases to avoid tough issues. When we, the people wanted to hear about the Democratic position on the War in Iraq, Tracy helped organize the Iraq Peace Vigil in Bozeman. She is dedicated to the common good and supports Choice, election reform and organizing local grassroots political participation. Her extensive experience in public policy includes developing real solutions to help working families in areas such as public health, protecting a clean & healthful environment, a living wage and quality education. She faces issues with honesty and clarity, no matter what is in current political fashion. Tracy is a leader and the most qualified candidate to represent us in Helena. Vote for her in the Primary June 6.

It hardly seen logical that it is again the political season-does it ever end? We can now safely say that the only certain things in life are death, taxes, and politics.
Primary elections are only a couple months away, and we would like to lend our support and encourage you to support Democratic candidate for House District 66, Mike Phillips. This letter is not about Mike's view of the issues; please visit with Mike when he stops by your house or check the Gallatin Democrats' Web site for more information about what issues are important to Mike.
This letter is about what increasingly bothers us in politics-partisanship, dishonesty, a lack of fairness, and poor ethics. While our party system is necessary for the process, We would rather have a representative who campaigns and votes on data, fact, conscience and morals, rather than on party lines, or with an eye toward raising money, winning future elections, and gaining power.
We have known Mike for several years, interacted both personally and professionally with Mike, and have even disagreed with Mike on some issues. We strongly believe that Mike is striving to be the politican we are looking for. He will look at all sides of the issue, find the facts, and vote according to what he feel is most sensible for House District 66 and all of Montana. He knows that both Republicans and Democrats have good ideas, and both have bad ideas. He will strive for fairness on all issues for all Montanans. He will admit what he does not know, but will find out. He will entertain all good ideas, regardless of origin. Of course the issues are important, but we think there, too, you will find Mike focused on issues of importance to Montana. We are pretty sure that Mike cannot do anything about the certainty of death, but he has promised (See website)to work for a fair and equitable tax system, and we are confident he will be a capable and honest representative within our political system.
Please support Mike Phillps in House District 66

My name is Mike Phillips and I am seeking election as the Representative for Montana's 66th House District, an area that stretches through the heart of Bozeman. My family and I live in the district, and I am excited about serving our "backyard". The district and the state alike are challenged by issues that are best addressed with a progressive approach advanced by an experienced, consensus-building Democrat like myself.
In my professional life I am a wildlife ecologist with 26 years of experience working with federal and state governments, Universities, non-governmental organizations, and private citizens on contentious natural resource issues.
In my private life I’ve been actively involved in Bozeman by serving on the Open Lands Board and the high school facilities task force, chairing the committee that passed the $55 million high school bond, running for the Montana House in 2004, helping to found the Bozeman Schools Foundation, coaching youth sport teams, and co-hosting a local talk radio show (Open Range, KMMS AM 1450).
My political philosophy is simple:
* As a candidate and a representative my work will be transparent, making it easy for anyone to hold me accountable.
* Because I value honesty and integrity, I will answer the questions that are asked of me directly and without guile.
* My politics are not sharply partisan. I believe that our common bonds as citizens and neighbors are more important than party affiliations. I will support good ideas regardless of their origin.
* To preserve the dignity of every Montanan, I will tirelessly advocate for tolerance of ideas and beliefs.
As a Representative I will focus on public education, locally-owned businesses, progressive energy policies, and a healthy environment (details @ www.mikephillipshd66.com ).
If you live in District 66 I would appreciate your vote on June 6.

Letter to the Editor Bozeman Daily Chronicle 4/3/06
As a mom, business owner, and active community member, I know that women face many hurdles in trying to fulfill their goals and dreams. Some of these hurdles just come with the territory of being a woman, but some are a result of our society's inequalities that are slow to disappear.
Montana Attorney General Mike McGrath bravely stepped forward this week and eliminated one of the biggest health inequalities facing women, when he decided that insurance companies needed to cover reproductive and contraceptive medical services and prescriptions the same as they cover other services. No longer will women have to grumble that "his" Viagra is covered, while "her" pills aren't!! McGrath's opinion will not only help keep women healthy and decrease their out-of-pocket medical costs; it will also help ensure that all women, regardless of income, are able to plan out their family, career and personal aspirations.
Voters should know, however, that the Attorney General's decision can be overturned during the next legislative session. There's been no more important time for Montanans to vote for representatives that will stand up for women's health and equality than in the upcoming elections. Make sure you're voting for someone you can count on!
