"Being defeated may have been one of the best things that ever happened to Burns," said a source close to the investigation.

Jack Abramoff and the Politics of 2006
Montana Senator Conrad Burns, who accepted $150,000 in campaign contributions from the lobbyist's operation and helped an Abramoff client score a $3 million federal grant, is the most vulnerable senator. Burns has just announced that he will return the money he took from Abramoff and the lobbyist's clients and associates, but that's not going to be enough to get the senator off the hook legally -- or politically

Matt Singer has a good take on Racicot:
Long story short, the RNC knows that the Republican Party in Montana is in shambles. They’re worried that this fact is going to cost them one vote in the Senate and one in the House, as well as continue to build the star power of one of their fiercest critics (Schweitzer) while giving a fairly powerful Senator (Baucus) more leeway to stand up against the Bush Administration
